From Broken Paw to Pom Paradise: Sir Charles’s Florida Adoption Journey

Welcome back to our home in sunny Florida! As usual, the Three Pom-Amigos had an exciting and wondrous week with, as usual, an amazing surprise.

SIR CHARLES (but you can call me Charlie), am writing the blog!

I know that I have been here only a very short time but I have learned so much, have been so loved and have had so much fun that I begged Becca to let me write the blog. When I moved in with my new family I didn’t even know what a blog was. But Becca, my sister, knows everything and she became my teacher. She suggested that I should tell my story from my point of view because it really is a magical journey. So here we go!

Unlike my brother Banjo and my sister Becca, who were born in Michigan, a cold-weather state, I was born in Florida, a very warm place to live. I am a Pomeranian, but PuppyDad says that I am a special kind of Pomeranian. I am a miniature Pomeranian, which means I am only about half as big as my brother and sister and will always be that special size.

PuppyDad reminds us that size is not the measure of talent and that we each have special talents. For example, Becca is very musical and plays her squeaker toys loudly (Becca's Favorite Squeaky Toys) and well, Banjo guards the house and barks to alert us, and I run like the wind, PuppyDad says.

My first big memory started out as a sad one because I broke one of my front legs, had a metal plate (whatever that is) attached to help the broken bones – this is what I heard the vet say when I had to stay at the vet’s office for a few nights.

I was afraid that I might not get better because I had not yet been adopted by a family.  But a wonderful woman took me home from the pet store and for two months nursed me back to health, including surgery to fix my broken leg. But my foster puppymom could not keep me, so I was back up for adoption.

For months I watched puppies get adopted and I put on my best puppy smiles and best behavior. But no luck. No family wanted me. My foster puppymom would stop by from time to time to bring me treats and remind me not to worry because soon I would find the perfect family.

Boy, was she right!

My heart leaped when she came through the door. She was the most beautiful PuppyMom that I had ever seen! When she smiled at me, it made my heart swell with love and made me happy right down to the tip of my tail and the bottom of my paws. I knew that she was perfect for me. I fell in love with my whole heart.

Much to my joy (and relief), PuppyMom fell in love with me! She wouldn’t put me down, and that made me so happy. I listened as she talked to the shop owner, and PuppyMom said the Magic Words; she wanted to adopt me!

I was so happy until I heard the “but” word. Because PuppyMom and PuppyDad already had two dogs, PuppyMom needed to talk to PuppyDad to see if adopting another dog would be ok. I didn’t know how I could wait another day, and PuppyMom sensed my worry, so she picked up her phone and called PuppyDad. I shouldn’t have worried. PuppyDad was so excited he said “Yes!”  and set up a rule that we can get one more dog, but in total, they can only weigh 30 pounds. Since I can’t do math, I had to wait until PuppyMom started to laugh. She explained that Becca and Banjo each weigh about 10 pounds, and I only weigh five pounds, so right now PuppyMom and PuppyDad only have 25 pounds of dogs. That leaves room for another five-pound dog! Like me!
